Colleen Sgroi is an American folk art painter and illustrator based in Massachusetts, known for her brightly colored, densely detailed paintings populated with animals, biblical scenes, and New England landscapes. She opened her own gallery, Colleen Sgroi Gallery & Art Classes, in 2002, where teaching art became one of her central passions. Her folk art style, characterized by whimsical, storybook-like compositions, has made her a recognizable presence in the world of American decorative folk painting.
Sgroi's work has reached far beyond gallery walls: her folk art paintings, prints and puzzles are sold all over the world, and she has done work with Disney, Fox Entertainment and Lions Gate Films. Notably, two of her Noah's Ark images were used in Disney's Baby Einstein "Baby Noah" DVD, giving her Noah's Ark imagery, dense with pairs of animals, lush greenery, and a rainbow arching over the ark, particular recognition among collectors of her work. This theme has proven to be one of her most popular and widely reproduced subjects, appearing in prints, lithographs, and painted editions that circulate frequently in the secondary and vintage art markets.
In addition to her painting career, in 2017 Colleen began to illustrate children's books, and her books have won multiple book awards including a Moon Beam Best Illustrator Award. Her dual reputation as a licensed commercial folk artist and a community-minded teaching artist, having served as a past board member of the Billerica Alliance, the Billerica Cultural Council, Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce and The Brush Gallery, adds to the appeal of her signed original works and open-edition prints among collectors of contemporary American folk art.
