Step back into 19th century America with this handwoven overshot coverlet, its bold indigo and cream geometric pattern still striking after nearly two centuries. Overshot coverlets like this one were a fixture of American households from the late 1700s through the mid-1800s, woven on four-harness looms by home weavers or itinerant professionals who traveled from farm to farm with their equipment. Indigo was prized for its deep, colorfast blue and remained one of the few reliable dyes available to rural weavers, making blue-and-white coverlets among the most commonly produced — and most treasured — textiles of the period.

This example features a wool weft over a linen or cotton warp, finished with a hand-applied twist fringe and a woven decorative border. Scattered surface staining is present, along with wear and fringe thinning consistent with age; please see photos for full condition details.
