Description

Antique hand-painted pottery oil lamp from Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico, a region renowned since pre-Hispanic times for its ceramic tradition, later blending indigenous techniques with Spanish colonial influences. The burnished cream-toned body is decorated with a folk-art floral and foliate design in green, rust, blue, and gold tones, characteristic of Tonalá ware's naturalistic motifs of birds, flowers, and foliage. The lamp retains its brass burner mechanism with a flame-adjustment wheel and wire chimney guides, along with the original clear glass chimney. The base bears an artist's mark in the form of a small cat's face, a charming and distinctive touch among the individual ceramicists and workshops of Tonalá. Measures approximately 12.5" H x 5" W.
