Lot 163: Persian/Mughal Style Miniature Painting, Polo/Hunt

Description

Fine hand-painted miniature depicting a lively equestrian scene, likely a polo match or mounted procession, in the Persian or Indo-Persian (Mughal) miniature painting tradition. This style of miniature painting flourished across Persia, and later India under Mughal patronage, prized for its intricate detail, vivid mineral and vegetable-based pigments, and often gold accents, historically used to illustrate manuscripts and works of literature. The scene shows a group of riders in colorful robes and turbans on horseback set against a hilly landscape with flowering trees and a distant domed pavilion, bordered by a fine hand-drawn scalloped decorative border in blue ink. The painting is presented within a wide inlaid frame decorated with a mosaic-style geometric pattern in bone, wood, and dark inlay, a technique associated with Persian/Middle Eastern marquetry work (sometimes called khatam or a related inlay tradition). Measures approximately 5" H x 7.75" W.
