Lot 222: Vintage Brass Clamshell Hinged Trinket Box

Description

This charming trinket box, measuring 1.75" H x 2.75" W x 4" L, is cast in solid brass in the naturalistic shape of a bivalve shell, with deeply ribbed growth lines radiating across both the domed lid and the lower half, right down to a nicely detailed hinge knuckle disguised as the shell's natural curve. Lifting the lid reveals a plain interior fitted with a working clasp, making it a practical little catchall for rings, cufflinks, coins, or other small treasures on a dresser or desk. Novelty boxes modeled after shells, animals, and other natural forms were a popular category of decorative brass ware through much of the 20th century, prized for the way they combine sculptural charm with everyday usefulness. The underside retains its original felt-style protective discs to prevent scratching furniture, and the interior carries small stamped numbers ("41" and "L4"), likely inventory or casting marks rather than a maker's signature.

Condition Report:

Good vintage condition, wear commensurate with age. The brass shows an attractive aged patina overall with scattered darker toning and light surface scratching, particularly to the high points of the ribbing. The hinge and clasp both function smoothly. The protective discs on the base show some wear and discoloration but remain attached. No dents or splits noted to the brass body.
