An antique wooden boat shuttle used for weaving on a hand or floor loom, carved from a single piece of hardwood with graceful pointed, tapered ends that allowed it to glide smoothly between the warp threads. The underside is hollowed out to house a metal spindle, or rod, on which a bobbin of weft yarn would have been wound and fed out as the shuttle passed back and forth across the loom. Small holes along the top surface likely held a metal eyelet or guide for the thread. Shuttles of this type were essential tools of hand-weaving traditions from the 18th through early 20th centuries, made in a range of sizes depending on the loom and fabric being woven.

Condition Report:

Wear commensurate with age. The wood shows surface cracking, staining, and grain separation typical of age and use. The metal spindle and hardware show expected rust and oxidation. No maker's mark is visible.
