A 96-piece sterling silver flatware set by Towle in the "French Provincial" pattern, marked "Towle Sterling" with the maker's shield mark on the reverse of each piece. The service includes a full range of place settings along with serving pieces such as a pierced spoon, gravy ladle, cake or pie server, sugar spoon, tongs, meat fork, and butter knives, housed in its original fitted wood chest lined in burgundy felt. The set totals 92.489 troy ounces of sterling silver; one knife in the set is not marked sterling, consistent with the common practice of pairing a stainless steel blade with a weighted sterling handle on dinner knives, though this piece has not been separately confirmed. Towle's French Provincial pattern, introduced in the mid-20th century, is a well-regarded design combining a scrolling floral motif with clean lines, and remains popular among collectors and users of traditional sterling flatware.
