Lot 589: Thai Yan Lipao Vine Woven Lidded Basket

Description

Finely woven lidded basket made from lipao (ya liphao) vine, a fern native to southern Thailand traditionally split into fine strands and hand-coiled into tight, glossy basketry. The form features a bulbous body, flared foot, and a domed lid with a raised center ring. Lipao weaving is a centuries-old Thai craft historically associated with royal and noble households, prized for the exceptional fineness and durability of the woven strands, and pieces are still sought after today by collectors of Southeast Asian basketry and decorative arts. Measures approximately 4" H x 5.5" W.

Condition:

Good vintage condition. Wear commensurate with age, including overall darkening/patina from handling and light fiber wear at the rim (see photos). No losses or breaks noted to the coiled structure. Please review photos closely; we do our best to catch all flaws but small imperfections can be missed.
