Mark Gutow is a Chicago-based American artist working primarily in watercolor and oil, with a body of work that also includes ink sketches and portraiture. He has displayed his artwork in Chicago, Illinois and Missoula, Helena, Hamilton and Polson, Montana, as well as in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico, and in Dazhou, Sichuan, in the People's Republic of China. His exhibition history spans several decades, beginning with an early prize in Chicago and continuing through more recent one-man and juried shows.
Gutow's practice ranges from location-painted watercolors made during his travels in Italy, capturing scenes in cities and villages such as Florence, Naples, and Sicily, to studio-based oils and live-model figure studies produced in Chicago. His exhibition record includes a two-man show and a one-man exposition at the Sichuan University of Arts and Science Museum of Art in Dazhou, China, as well as a one-man show at the Academy Space Gallery in Missoula, Montana in 2019. He has also taken part in juried exhibitions closer to home, including a 2023 show at the Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights, Illinois.
As a working representational painter with an international exhibition footprint stretching from the American Midwest and Mountain West to Mexico and China, Gutow's watercolors and oils appeal to collectors interested in contemporary plein-air and studio painting rooted in observed landscape, architecture, and the human figure. His long, active career and the geographic breadth of his subject matter, from Sicilian hill towns to Chicago studio scenes, give his work a distinctive personal travelogue quality that collectors of regional American watercolorists often find appealing.
